Blog Prompt 5

In the scenario that a ghost came down to earth and erased all the music from the past, well first of all I would have a word or two or this ghost! But this is an interesting thought exercise in the way that it makes me wonder what music of the present day would become. Since music is continuously building off of the past with each genre jumping off the last. With musicians having no reference points, nothing to pull from to adapt or be inspired by it makes me think that the new music could go one of two ways. Either it becomes all uniform and sounds similar in nature. Or it could become completely bizarre and nonsensical since there are are no longer ground rules and styles from the past to consider. I wonder too if this would make artist less self conscious to express themselves in the ways they please. Or would it limit creativity due to the lack jumping pads and input from the past. I personally think it’s more likely that music would become all more similar in the scenario, because there would be no way for the artists of today to re-create the sounds of the past. I believe that the times we live in play a large role in whats created. Musicians works will to some degree be a reflection of their atmosphere. Also considering that are present world also has very different technology as well as social and political conditions to that of the past, it would therefore be impossible to build from the ground up the genres of the past.

On the other hand although music from the past is so important in shaping the future of sound, playing music exclusively from the past comes with its own implications. If we deem the rules of music and regulations that come with much of the music of the past as the standard, we would never allow space for experimentation minority groups and evolution of music as a whole.

This song by Darondo is one of my favourites to play on kit drum. It provides a warm relaxing groove which feels like a swaying slow walk in the park. I usually follow the drum beat but often alter it to make it more interesting and fun.

Nietzsche’s quote:

I’m not entirely sure what Nietzsche meant by this quote, but to me it seems as though he is pointing to the fact that whenever we look back on the past we are doing so through the eyes of the present. Though we can not change this entirely, we must evaluate what to preserve and what still holds value through our higher selves and noblest qualities.
